Veggies: Reducing Prostate Cancer Risk

If you just can't stand broccoli, you might be missing out on a substance that can reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer. A study reported in the January 5, 2000, issue of The Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men who consume 28 or more servings of vegetables per week had a 35% lower risk of getting prostate cancer then those who ate fewer then 14 servings. Eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, helped even more. Those who ate 3 or more servings of these vegetables per week had a 41% lower risk of getting prostate cancer then those who ate less then 1 serving per week - even taking into account the men's total vegetable intake.

Why are cruciferous vegetables such powerful cancer fighters? They contani substances called isothiocyantes, which can detoxify carcinogens.
