Veggies:
Reducing Prostate Cancer
Risk
If
you just can't stand broccoli,
you might be missing out on
a substance that can reduce
the risk of getting prostate
cancer. A study reported in
the January 5, 2000, issue
of The Journal of the National
Cancer Institute found that
men who consume 28 or more
servings of vegetables per
week had a 35% lower risk of
getting prostate cancer then
those who ate fewer then 14
servings. Eating cruciferous
vegetables such as broccoli
and cauliflower, helped even
more. Those who ate 3 or more
servings of these vegetables
per week had a 41% lower risk
of getting prostate cancer
then those who ate less then
1 serving per week - even taking
into account the men's
total vegetable intake.
Why are cruciferous vegetables
such powerful cancer fighters?
They contani substances called
isothiocyantes, which can detoxify
carcinogens.
If you cannot stand broccoli,
try some of the variations
now in the markets. Two options
include broccolini, a cross
between broccoli and chinese
kale, and broccoflower, a cross
between broccoli and cauliflower. |
